Aunt Donna and Uncle Drew's Wedding

*If for some reason the pictures stop changing,
run your mouse over them*

In November we got to go to Florida for Aunt Donna (Austin's sister) and Uncle Drew's wedding. It was all as gorgeous as you can imagine. It was on the beach in Marco Island at sunset and everything went without a hitch. Austin's mom made all of the dresses (excluding the wedding dress) and Aunt Donna did a wonderful job making sure that all of the girls felt like princesses for the day. She gave them each bags full of goodies like nail polish, rhinestone flip flops, pearl necklaces, lip gloss...the whole works! We moms put on a spa day for the girls and got them all ready together, with the High School Musical soundtrack blastin' in the background. We forgot to have something for them to wear while they were getting ready so we just had them all pull their slips up to their armpits. The 2 1/2 hours we had to get them ready flew by without us even knowing and we were all scrambling at the last minute, but I think it all turned out okay. They all looked so cute dressed up and I am sure they will all remember this forever!

During the pre-wedding photo shoot, Kamae had a big wad of gum in her mouth (also from the goodie bag) and she kept blowing bubbles. The photographer seemed like he couldn't get enough pictures of her blowing those bubbles and he nicknamed her, "Bubbles" and, of course, she hammed it up for him!:)

The wedding ceremony was beautiful and their vows were, like I mentioned in the captions, tear-jerkers. They were straight from the heart and especially since there's a child involved, it hit straight to our hearts as well. We were so glad that we were able to be a part of this special day and hopefully it won't be too long before the Orton family gets together again!

Wannado City

We took a trip to Florida in November for Austin's sister's wedding. Austin flew out early in the week because he was able to piggy back a business trip on top of it. The girls and I flew out midweek (my mom was brave and kind enough to take the boys) and met him. The first full day we were there we took the girls to a fun place called Wannado City. It's a place indoors that looks just like a miniature city and the kids get a chance to try all different occupations. They earn fake money for doing certain jobs and have to pay money to do others. They even had a bank with bank accounts and ATM cards with pin numbers. They got to be dentists, veterinarians, clowns in a circus, rock climbers, firemen (they even got to put out a fake fire...just a building facade with lots of smoke coming out of the windows...with fire hoses that really shot water and they got to ride around the city in the fire truck..siren and all), bakers, jewelers, fashion models (that was Kamae's favorite and the only one we just had to repeat...Paige felt silly and opted to be the photographer the second time around), pizza makers, chocolateers at the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory, beauticians, marine biologists and probably even more that I can't remember. We didn't do them, but they could have also been actors and new anchors (you have to be able to read pretty well to do those). It was the cutest place and girls had a blast. We were there for five hours and weren't able to do everything. So far, Ft. Lauderdale is their only location and I think they are opening one in New York. I think it would do really well here, but you never know!

I'm Back!

Hey guys! They promised me today that our internet is fixed for good this time. I say I'll believe it when I see it, but hopefully it's true. So, over the next week or so I will try to update as much as I can!

So Frustrating...

I apologize for being such a slacker, but it's not my fault, I promise!:) Our internet service has not been working for the past couple of weeks. We've had people out to figure out what the problem has been and they have concluded today that the outside switch is going out. So, on a rare occasion we'll get service, but usually it doesn't work. It's working for the minute right now, so I thought I'd explain while I have the opportunity. They told me it should be fixed by today, so hopefully I'll be able to update tomorrow! Sorry to be so boring lately, but we'll spice things up soon!

7 Random Things About Me

1. I’m not an OCD person, but when I get ready in the morning, I follow the same routine...shower, dry off and leave my towel on, remove any leftover eye make-up, brush my teeth, put on deodorant, dry out my ears with Q-tips (I have to be in a comfortable position, like sitting on the edge of the tub so that I can enjoy that to the fullest). Then I brush my hair, get partially dressed, do my hair, do my make-up and then finish getting dressed. I get a little grumpy if I have to do it out of order for some reason and I don’t remember the last time I was able to do all of that without getting interrupted.

2. Ever since my friend Kamae and I were little, I’ve been obsessed with splitting my nails (both fingers and toes...gross, I know).

3. I worked in the bakery at Albertson’s.

4. One of my life’s dreams is to own and run a bed and breakfast.

5. I have a widow’s peak and my arms don’t fully straighten.

6. I currently have 20 piano students, 4 children, 1 husband and 0 pets.

7. My husband does the laundry because I’m so bad at it.

Linda, Jenny, Heidi, Sarah and Kim...tag, you're it!

Happy Halloween!

Omniture is out of control!

My sister, Kristen, works at a company called Omniture and they are crazy! Each department gets thousands of dollars to use and they each pick a theme and go all out. The executive department went Disney and it seriously was like Disneyland, but without the rides! They honestly fly 7 midgets in from Vegas and they were the dwarfs! I couldn't get over it. Kristen's department decided to do celebrities in jail and she was Martha Stewart. Check out all of her details in her picture. She did a good job! The kids loved it, except for the fact that it was very crowded. The winning department gets a large budget for a fun party. I want to work there!:)

Trip to Thanksgiving Point's Cornbelly's

We went with my cousin Staci and her kids, Jacob and Kera, to Cornbelly's. I took Paige out of school for the morning so she could go with us. Once we got there and realized how much it cost and how much there was to do, we decided to stay all day. It was a lot of fun! However, word to the wise, don't take a cheap umbrella stroller through a corn maze. I think I carried it as much as I pushed it. It didn't work so well. They also had a giant inflatable dinosaur (probably 3/4 the length of a football field) that you could walk through. We barely made it past the tonsils before the kids were crying hysterically. Paige even had nightmares that night. So, not the high point of the trip, but they thoroughly loved everything else!

Jack's Pumpkins

My mom found this sign and bought it because we just had to have it for our porch! It was a nice touch!

Carving pumpkins

"No! It's not ready yet!" Apparently we weren't allowed to take pictures until the project was complete!
It's not a true pumpkin carving night with Austin if a drill isn't involved!

Show off!

I've been very blessed to have had babies that would hold their own bottles, but I'm not sure how many of them mastered the one-handed grasp!

Look who's standing!

I think this is the earliest any of my kids have started pulling themselves up to stand (he's 7 1/2 months)....I know, I'm in big trouble! By the way, my favorite parts of this picture are 1) Kamae peeking through the crib slats...she was standing in front of Jack and I asked her to move out of the picture and 2) the fact that I thought I got a great deal at Old Navy for Jack's Halloween shirt ($2.50) only to realize that it must have been made for girls because it's a very fitted shirt! So, he only got to wear it for about an hour. Not such a good deal.

Test your stomach...

It may be too subtle, but on Austin's post on the octopi, there's a link to a You Tube video. If you are up for a treat, click on it. It puts Fear Factor to shame. I seriously had to look away so I didn't hurl. Check it out....if you dare.

I just don’t think that a person would do that

I told my daughter, Paige (6 yrs old), that I ate an octopus when I was in Florida. She would not believe me. I showed her a picture of the vat of octopi from the restaurant, thinking that would convince her that I was telling the truth. However, she pointed out that just because I had a picture did not mean that I actually ate an octopus. She wanted video. I offered her a chance to call someone who was there, but she insisted that she would not believe anyone. She said, “I just don’t think that a person would do that.” I even showed her a video that I found on YouTube of a man eating a live octopus (not sure I could do that.) But, Paige refuses to be convinced that her dad actually ate an octopus. It is just too weird for her. I guess next time I will have to take video.

I'm A Big Boy Now!

Spencer gave me a birthday present about a week and a half after his birthday. He potty trained himself!! It was an absolute miracle...I was honestly to the point where I thought, "I'll just potty train Spencer and Jack together." We had never really even given it a serious attempt because our first goal was never reached: just trying to get him to even tell us when he would have a messy diaper. That was step #1 and he couldn't and wouldn't even do that! Then, one day, it just clicked for him and he's been wearing underwear ever since (even at nights and during naps)! That evening Spencer and I went out on a date. We got all ready and even put on cologne and perfume (he still reminds me that every time he sees it...it's really cute.) We went to the dinosaur museum and then ate at the little cafe that they have there. We were pretty much the only people there and it was so nice to have free reign of the place! It was really good for us because as most of you know, Spencer and I have our ups and downs. He just doesn't stop, which is pretty typical for a boy, but it gets pretty exhausting and I can lose my patience with it. So, to have an evening with just the two of us with no time constraints was amazing. I felt like we really became friends that night. When we were walking into the museum I pretended like I was scared of the big dinosaur on the outside wall. I was holding him and he patted my back and stroked my hair and told me that he would protect me. It was so cute! Then while we were eating he kept offering me his dinner and wanting me to try a bite because it was "so so yummy." I asked him if he wanted a mandarine orange out of my salad and he said, "Yeah, sure!" He makes me laugh. We had a great time and ended the evening by going to Target and having him pick out his new big boy underwear (cars and spiderman) and I couldn't resist picking up a package of the little boxer briefs...how cute are those?

Happy Birthday, Spencer!

I can't believe he's three! Although it seems like he's been in our family forever, I can't believe how quickly it's gone by. He absolutely had to have a baseball cake...he loves baseball, but I think he loves Craig even more. In fact, that may be why he loves baseball. He just adores his uncle and felt so special to be able to use his bowl and mug for his cake and ice cream! And once we noticed that they both had baseball shirts on, we just had to have a picture! I just asked him what he thinks about Craig and he said, "He my best fwend. I wuv him." He will sure be missed while he's gone! Spence, we're so lucky to have you as part of our family! You are such a sweet and funny boy! We love you!

Thanks Aunt Steph and Cousin Jenny!!!

This is what Spence-man got in the mail for his birthday from the Lynch's (Austin's sister and family). First of all, he was so excited to just get something in the mail. It could have been a head of broccoli and I think he would have been happy! When he saw it was a Mr. Incredible costume he started jumping up and down and within 5 seconds he was stripping his clothes off! Of course he wore it for the rest of the day and still wears it religiously! We had a knight costume all ready for him for Halloween, but this one may trump it! Thank you guys so much...he loves it!!

The call is in!!!

Craig, my little brother got his mission call today and he's going to the.....drum roll, please....Brazil Curitiba mission! He's going to the MTC in Sao Paulo, Brazil and will report there on Feb. 13, 2007. My older brother, Marc, was particularly excited since he also served in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). Craig got what he was hoping for...somewhere where there are poverty stricken areas and where he can learn a new language. We know he'll do a great job! We are so excited for him and amazingly there weren't too many tears (I think my girls were too preoccupied with their cousins to really realize what was going on...probably a good thing)!

After church photo shoot

I can't look at this last picture without smiling! I love those little dimples in his eyebrows! I just have to take advantage of this age for pictures...it's a very small window...when they are sitting up and not crawling. You can put them there and they don't move! I really have to go get some professional ones of him taken...if you talk to me in the next week, keep reminding me!

Jack's New Teeth

This ought to be interesting!

We informed the girls at FHE tonight that Craig (my little bro) may be getting his mission call this week and explained to them what that meant. You would have thought that we had just told them that he died. Hysterics. Paige couldn't even speak she was crying so hard and Kamae insisted that she talk to Craig to tell him that they will miss him. She was crying so hard he could hardly understand her. Then they made me cry. Holy moley. We're going to be a wreck on Wednesday and I can't even fathom what it will be like when it's actually time to say goodbye! This ought to be interesting!

Oh, I forgot to mention that when we first started talking about it, Paige immediately began crying. Kamae shot up from her FHE position (laying on the ground) and yelled with her finger pointing in the air, "Yeah, he won't be able to hit us anymore!!" And then she started crying.

The shirt says it all...

This picture, of course, was taken by one of said grandparents! (Thanks, Mom!) Oh, and by the way, I know that when Spencer wore this shirt, he was walking and he didn't start walking until he was 16 months. Hmmm...they may be sharing clothes sooner than I thought!:)

Invisible...

Aubri, my sister-in-law, emailed this to me and I really liked it. Thank you to all of my invisible friends...and of course, my invisible mom!

I'm invisible.

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response,
the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone
and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see
I'm on the phone?' Obviously not. No one can see if I'm on the phone,
or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the
corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible. Some days I
am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie
this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not
even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a
satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a
car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.' I was certain that these
were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history
and the mind that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had
disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's
going, she's going, she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having
dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England. Janice had
just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on
about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at
the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and
feel sorry for myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it
was the only thing I could find that was clean. My unwashed hair was
pulled up in a clip and I was afraid I could actually smell
peanut butter in it. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice
turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought
you this.'? It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe. I
wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her
inscription: 'To Charlotte, with admiration for the greatness of what
you are building when no one sees.' In the days ahead I would read -
no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me,
four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work: No
one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of
their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they
would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no
credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that
the eyes of God saw everything. A legendary story in the book told of
a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built,
and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He
was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time
carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No
one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'
I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was
almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I
see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you
does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no
cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over.
You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what
it will become.' At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction.

But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for
the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my
strong, stubborn pride. I keep the right perspective when I see
myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job
that they will never see finished, to work on something that their
name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say
that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there
are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree. When I really
think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing
home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My mom gets up at 4 in the
morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for
three hours and presses all the linens for the table. ' That would
mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to
want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his
friend, to add, 'You're gonna love it there.' As mothers, we are
building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right.
And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only
at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the
world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Oh, Paige...

Today, the kids watched the movie "The Mailbox" for the first time. Austin put it on for them and let me sleep in! It's one of those old church movies and it's about a lonely elderly lady. So, I come downstairs just as the movie ends and Kamae starts telling me about it. She says, "We just watched a movie about an old lady who got some mail from her kids and then she walked back to her house from the mailbox and when she got inside, she took her coat off and sat in the chair and died." Then, Paige follows that up with, "That's a bummer, huh, Mom?"

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Chicken Crossing Road
Originally uploaded by Kier42
So, we were driving to school today and there was a chicken crossing the road. (No joke.) I was with Spencer and Kamae and her two friends that are in Kindergarten. I didn't expect any of them to catch my joke, but I said, "Hey guys, there's a chicken! Why did the chicken cross the road?" After they all crank their necks to see it, they all start making jokes about that being a joke and there really was a chicken crossing the road. Hee hee! Then, Spencer, who I didn't think was catching any of it, said, "Chicken? In the road? Why did the chicken cross the road? Oh, I get it. It's a joke, huh, mom?" and then proceeds to fake laugh. Aahh, these kids are growing up too fast and they're much smarter than I give them credit for!

The Essence of Jack

I wanted to add this picture to the other post, but apparently I had met my limit. I wanted to share this picture of Jack because it sums him up pretty well. Look at those chubby cheeks and his chill face. That's what Jack's about...being chubby and chill. Anyone think he looks Kamae? (Kamae is about 4 months older in this picture than Jack is now.)
